“All These Things I Hear”

(Written for a friend losing their grandmother. It was easier to portray the story flipped around.)

She’ll kiss these lips
One last time
Then put him on a pedestal
Oh so high in her mind
And she says
Never will I forget you
Never will I cry
I will only remember you
The way you were
Long before you died.
Like the day we held hands
And said our sacrament
Remember the day we kissed
Because you, I’d miss.
Then we said goodbye
And I’m sorry,
I promised I wouldn’t cry.
Hearing these things
Makes me want to pull you close
Like you’re the butter
And I’m the toast
All these things that I feel
Make our lives feel so real
So when we die
I hope it’s in your arms
That I lie.
